This 2012 Shelby Cobra is one of just 50 cars produced by Shelby American to honor the golden anniversary of the iconic CSX 2000, the first Shelby Cobra ever built. The 50th Anniversary Limited Edition CSX 8000-series Cobra has exclusive use of CSX serial numbers 8950-8999. Carroll Shelby announced the introduction of the CSX 8000 cars on January 22, 2011 and all 50 cars were sold within 48 hours. The late Mr. Shelby kept numbers 8950 and 8999 (both fiberglass-bodied cars), and later sold CSX 8950 for a substantial premium.
This particular car is CSX8996 and number 47 of the 50 cars, but more importantly is one of only five aluminum bodied 50th Anniversary cars. It is was assembled with a reported NOS 289-cid HiPo engine fitted with two four-barrel Holley carburetors on a Shelby intake, plus Cobra cast aluminum valve covers and Cobra Roadster oil pan. The trans is an NOS Top Loader four-speed with proper period-correct shifter. It is stated that this particular Shelby is one of the two 50th Anniversary cars built that are “as close to an original 289 Cobra as one can get.” After the initial build the current owner sent it here to CCA to have it further dialed in, at a cost of over $10,000, to a period-correct look encompassing proper ride height, chassis tuning, Michelin XWX tires, and making sure every aspect of the car was spot on and ready to deliver the true 289 Cobra experience.
This 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra is a registered Shelby American, Inc. Cobra with the proper CSX numbers and a manufacturer’s statement of origin signed by Carroll Shelby himself. All 50 examples are listed in the Shelby Registry. All 50 cars were offered only in Black with Rosso red leather covered seating surfaces, dash covering and map pockets. The carpets are wool Mercedes Wine in material and color. The design is derived from the original 1962 styling, with only a few factory options and improvements over and above the original product. Among the improvements are a stronger steel tube frame, improved cooling, additional heat shielding, superior brakes, and rack and pinion steering as found in the later original CSX2000 Cobras.
The car’s tube frame that holds the 289-cid V-8 engine and four-speed manual transmission, also houses a Shelby aluminum housing differential, uprated four-wheel disc brakes and Spicer half-shafts. The cockpit features Stewart Warner gauges, tinted windscreen visors, leather-covered dash and map pockets, unique 50th Anniversary floor mats, Shelby harnesses and wood steering wheel with a limited edition horn button. The front grille is instantly recognizable, and the car looks ready for action with front and rear bumpers, wind wings, chrome 15-inch wire wheels and unique front, rear and side 50th Anniversary badging that is finished in a gold tone.
Also accompanying this Cobra is a factory special edition 50th Anniversary car cover; offered only with this edition of car. It also has its VIN of CSX 8996 and #47 of 50 sequence number on a plate from Shelby American on the dash. The sale also includes the original 50th Anniversary Cobra jacket, a complete build and history book, all factory documentation and brochures, plus a model of the car and an enameled tin sign with the 50th Anniversary Cobra memorialized on it.
Oh, and did I mention this is essentially a brand new car with just 104 original miles on it?
Over ten years after they all sold out in hours this may be the only opportunity to get an essentially brand new, in the wrapper, 104 mile 1 of 5 aluminum bodied CSX8000 Anniversary cars you’ll ever get.
