1964 Shelby 289 Cobra CSX2223

-12/16/14: Thank you for all of your interest but CSX2223 has been sold!-

A once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase one of the finest unrestored, completely correct and unmodified 289 Cobras in existence. CSX2223 was purchased new by Dr. Joseph Barkey on 2/19/1964 from none other than Ed Hugus’ Continental Cars dealership. As many of you know Hugus was a good friend and business associate of Carroll Shelby, and Hugus’ dealership actually completed the first few Cobras built, not Shelby American!

Delivered new exactly as you see it here in red/black, with all of the Class A accessories and even a few neat “competition” options such as front and rear sway bars and side exiting exhaust.

Dr. Barkey was the track medic for Mid Ohio and used CSX2223 in his duties there. It was his prized possession. When he could no longer drive he insisted on retaining CSX2223, placing it in storage in his garage- the same garage that CSX2223 had called home since new. Dr. Barkey passed away in 2009, and in early 2011 I purchased the car from Dr. Barkey’s son.

Since the car had been dormant for a number of years my shop carefully and thoroughly recommissioned every mechanical system on CSX2223 from the engine to the suspension, all without doing anything more cosmetically than cleaning everything and preserving all of the original finishes. The fuel system, all hydraulics, all suspension bushings and pins, differential, transmission, cooling system, and more were all comprehensively serviced. Today the car simply runs and drives as new.

Unlike most Cobras CSX2223 retains every original part, component, and fastener it left Shelby American with, including its original engine, transmission, cast iron intake and Autolite carburetor, cast “Y” headers and original hardware, its original engine break-in fan, original wheels, original leather seats, and even all of its top, side curtains and tonneau cover. Dr. Barkey had CSX2223 repainted once many, many years ago and it has now mellowed to a patina consistent with this incredibly original car complete with road rash and other scars of use.

The paperwork and documentation for CSX2223 is second to none, from the original purchase contract to its original owners manual and even the original Cobra warranty paperwork, a document even I had never seen before! CSX2223 even retains her original keys, Cobra key fob, and dealership inventory key tag from Continental Cars.

CSX2223 has been shown once, at the 2014 SAAC National Convention at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. It won a SAAC Survivor and Chairman’s Choice award.

I know Cobras extremely well and have owned quite a few and looked at hundreds more. CSX2223 is the caliber of Cobra that is nearly extinct. It has never been damaged, retains all of its original drivetrain, trim, and other components, was retained by its original owner for 47 years, and has been sympathetically sorted into flawless operating condition.
