1985 was the last year of the classic “Four-Eye” Fox Body Mustangs. It also represented a few other notable details for the model- as the last year of the good old Holley 4BBL carburetor on the top-of-the line 5.0L engine, and the first year of the roller camshaft in the same.
When new, for many of us, a 1985 GT was the ultimate dream car besides being the whole part of the 5.0L Mustang being responsible for kicking off a whole new era of muscle cars that continues to this day.
The sad part is most of these final year carbureted GTs were hot-rodded, modified beyond return, or otherwise destroyed in the 33 years since. Heck, they are virtually extinct in any form today.
But wait. This particular 1985 GT Hatchback is almost as good as being able to step back over three decades and fix all of those problems. Why? Because this is a new 1985 GT. Or, as close as we’ll ever see. Not only is it in optimal spec, being a 5 speed, with no sunroof or T-Tops, and in a great color…but it also has just 3,900 original miles. Yes, three thousand nine hundred miles. More impressive is that it looks like just 39 miles. It is that good. From its original Gatorback tires to its original battery, belts, and hoses it is just unreal. I was told it had never been wet and I believe it.
But Fox-body Mustangs don’t survive like this without being cared for by the right people. And that is where the ownership history of this one really plays a part. It’s original owner was Jeff Mays, who is the current MCA President. It’s second owner was noted collector Terry McCoy, who sold it to its 3rd owner, Kerry Wiland, yet another Fox Body enthusiast. The car came to me from Paul Jones, who is on the Board of Directors for the MCA. It would be harder to find a more dedicated group of Mustang guys and the proof is the incredible level of preservation seen in this car.
As such it is the recipient of multiple MCA Gold Awards (with zero point deductions) and the coveted MCA Thoroughbred Award. It is, again quite simply, a brand new 5 Speed, slick top, 1985 GT.
And, if you’re like me, you can appreciate that. A lot.
It is no secret that Fox Body Mustangs in general are among the hottest collector cars out there. But few of them remain in true blue chip condition. Long term it is the truly special unrestored, flawless original examples like this that true collectors will seek. As we’ve always heard- horseshoes and hand grenades are the only two things where “close” counts. Don’t settle for “close” when you can have perfect. Right?
