As I always say “there are the best cars and the rest of the cars.” I only collect the best and this is certainly one of them- perhaps the finest unrestored 1967 Shelby of all and it (was) up for grabs on BaT!

Description: I love special Shelbys and have a passion for any incredible unrestored car and this benchmark level 1967 GT350 is both rolled into one! This is #3002, a late production factory 4-speed car in Dark Moss Green. Quite simply it is one of the finest unrestored Shelbys I know of.

History: 3002’s original owner, James Vigani, pampered it for 40 years, reportedly never exposing it to inclement weather. And 3002’s second owner was none other than SAAC’s 1967 Registrar Dave Matthews who purchased 3002 in 2007. When Dave sold the car years ago I didn’t move fast enough and it went to a new owner in the UK. So in 2015 when I heard 3002 could be purchased from its 3rd owner in the UK I wasted no time in repatriating it to the good old USA as its 4th owner.

Today 3002 remains in absolutely amazing completely unrestored condition, wearing its original factory-applied paint and all trim. And, thanks to the Vigani family it retains all of its original paperwork, window sticker, owners manual, and even vintage photographs of when 3002 was used in a print ad for, of all things, beer! The body, paint, interior, engine compartment and chassis are all extraordinary. Picture a one-year old car, that’s essentially how 3002 looks. The chassis is particularly impressive, it looks as though it just rolled off the line at LAX. No corrosion, all factory finishes, no monkey business. This is the kind of unrestored car we all dream of.

In June 2017 I brought 3002 to SAAC-42 and entered it in the judged concours. When the dust settled she emerged with a coveted Concours Gold Survivor award- which means this original unrestored car was judged against the same standard a restored car would be. 3002 has also won a Heritage Concours award at the national Team Shelby meet. Additionally it has been featured in my Shelby Mustang Fifty Years book and my new Shelby American Sixty Years of High Performance book.

Better still 3002 runs, drives, and even kinda smells like a brand new car, which is really the beauty of any great unrestored car isn’t it? You just can’t duplicate that. It is a pleasure to experience such a great time capsule and it has been a highlight of my Shelby Mustang collection.
